Although George Carlin passed away more than 15 years ago, a new artificial intelligence-generated comedy special is resurrecting the legendary comedian’s humor. The AI icon’s distinctive style and provocative commentary on topics like Trump, trans Americans, reality TV, and technology are brought to life in an hourlong comedy special presented by Dudesy. Dudesy is an AI comedy platform founded by Will Sasso, a former Mad TV alum, and podcaster Chad Kultgen.
The AI-generated comedy special attempts to capture Carlin’s iconic style and provide a fresh take on current events. In a YouTube description written by AI, the project is introduced with a disclaimer acknowledging that it is not the real George Carlin and that the content was created using AI in a manner similar to a human impressionist. The description states, “For the next hour, I’ll be doing my best George Carlin impersonation just like a human being would. I tried to capture his iconic style to tackle the topics I think the comedy legend would be talking about today.”
It remains unclear whether Carlin’s family is involved in or endorses the AI-generated comedy special.
During the stand-up special, Dudesy emphasizes that the AI recreation is not meant to replace the real Carlin, and the content is presented in the style of a human impressionist. The AI-generated Carlin begins the set by stating, “I listened to all of George Carlin’s material and did my best to imitate his voice, cadence, and attitude.”
In April, Dudesy faced legal challenges when NFL legend Tom Brady threatened to sue the comedians behind the platform over an AI-generated comedy special featuring jokes supposedly delivered by the former Buccaneers quarterback. Reports from CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated highlighted Brady’s objection to the unauthorized use of his likeness.
The AI-generated Carlin addresses contemporary issues, including the challenges faced by the transgender community in influencing legislation. The AI impression remarks, “They say trans people make up such a small percentage of the population, that they shouldn’t get to have any input in legislation, even laws that will directly affect their communities and lives. Funny how that same argument doesn’t apply to members of the NRA.”
The special also delves into critiques of billionaires, with the AI Carlin throwing shade at tech magnates such as Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla. The AI-generated Carlin reflects on the societal impact of billionaires, criticizing their unchecked greed and self-interest at the expense of basic human rights. Despite this critique, the AI Carlin points out the irony that people are the ones who initially provided these billionaires with their wealth.
The comedy special, titled “I’m Glad I’m Dead,” pays homage to Carlin’s famed social commentary and controversial style. It mimics the essence of the late comedian’s work, addressing societal issues with humor and a critical lens. George Carlin, known for his sharp wit and fearless approach to taboo subjects, passed away in 2008 due to heart failure.
In 2009, a posthumous autobiography titled “Last Words” was published, offering insights into Carlin’s challenging childhood in a New York Irish Catholic neighborhood, his tumultuous 36-year marriage, and his journey to comedic fame. The AI-generated comedy special serves as a unique tribute, attempting to capture the spirit of Carlin’s comedic legacy through artificial intelligence.
