Renowned singer-songwriter Melanie Safka, widely known as Melanie, passed away at the age of 76. Melanie’s career soared after her performance at Woodstock, and she gained further acclaim by winning an Emmy Award in 1989 for her songwriting on the CBS series “Beauty and the Beast.”

The sad news was shared by Melanie’s children through a heartfelt post on the singer/songwriter’s official Facebook page. In the post, her children expressed the difficulty of conveying the news and described Melanie as one of the most talented, strong, and passionate women of her era. Melanie’s passing occurred peacefully on January 23, 2024, leaving a void in the world that her artistic brilliance once illuminated.

Melanie’s achievements in the music industry include winning the outstanding achievement in music and lyrics award at the 1989 Emmys. She received this accolade alongside Lee Holdridge for composing the lyrics to the theme song of “Beauty and the Beast” (1987–1990). The popular series featured actors such as Ron Perlman, Roy Dotrice, Jay Acovone, Linda Hamilton, and Renn Woods.

Melanie’s diverse discography encompasses hits like the Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper “Brand New Key,” “What Have They Done to My Song Ma,” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain).” Notably, she co-founded Neighborhood Records with her husband, Peter Schekeryk, establishing herself as the first American woman to open a mainstream record label.

Reflecting on her Woodstock experience in a 2018 interview, Melanie recalled arriving at Max Yasgar’s farm in Bethel, New York, with her mother, Polly Safka. At that time, she was relatively unknown in America, lacking a band or significant recognition. However, her performance of “Beautiful People” quickly resonated with the audience, and Melanie walked off the stage as a newfound celebrity.
