Recent data suggests that the largest population of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender adults in the United States resides in the Southern region, confirming trends observed in recent years.
Nationwide estimates indicate that over 5% of U.S. adults identify as LGBTQ+, consistent with previous data on the LGBTQ+ population. The report, compiled by the Williams Institute at the University of California Los Angeles and based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasizes that individuals aged 18-24 are more likely to identify as LGBTQ+.
According to the report covering 2020 and 2021, there were approximately 14 million LGBTQ+ adults in the United States, with certain states showing notably higher percentages of gay and queer residents compared to others. Recent Gallup polls have indicated a slightly higher percentage of U.S. adults identifying as LGBTQ+, aligning with multiple surveys that have shown a steady increase in the adult LGBTQ+ population over the years.
Cathy Renna, a spokesperson for the National LGBTQ Task Force, commented on the trend, stating, “Look at the numbers; more people are coming out younger, and people are coming out in places where LGBTQ folks have been less out and visible.”
When examining the data by state, the report highlights Washington, D.C., Oregon, and Delaware as having the highest percentages of gay and queer residents. It is important to note that the U.S. Census, the primary national population survey, does not collect data on individuals’ sexuality or gender identity. However, in 2021, smaller surveys initiated by the bureau began incorporating questions on sexuality and gender identity for the first time.
The findings underscore the evolving landscape of LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance, with increased openness among younger generations and a growing presence in regions where LGBTQ+ individuals may have been less visible historically. The data also serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity and representation in understanding the diverse experiences of LGBTQ+ communities across the country.
As societal attitudes continue to evolve, comprehensive and accurate data collection becomes crucial for informing policies, resources, and support systems that cater to the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. The ongoing efforts to include questions on sexuality and gender identity in surveys contribute to a better understanding of the LGBTQ+ population’s distribution and experiences, fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
