A new year often prompts travelers to explore new destinations, and in 2024, safety is a top priority for those planning trips. More people are considering solo travel and venturing off the beaten path, making safety a crucial factor in their decision-making process. In response to this growing concern, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has released its ninth annual State of Travel Insurance report, identifying the safest countries in the world for travelers.
Carol Mueller, Vice President at Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, noted that the definition of a safe destination has evolved. Travelers now emphasize countries where they feel they can move about freely without discrimination or harassment. The report is based on a survey of 1,702 people sharing their travel experiences and incorporates data from third-party resources evaluating safety concerns, such as terrorism, weather emergencies, health measures, and the safety of underrepresented groups. The Global Peace Index and the State Department’s travel safety ratings were among the sources considered.
Here are the top 10 safest countries for travelers in 2024:
Canada: Topping the list, Canada is known for its low violent crime rates and strict gun laws, contributing to its reputation as a safe destination. With a high standard of living and political stability, Canada offers travelers a secure environment.
Switzerland: Renowned for its security and low crime rates, Switzerland secured the second spot. The country is celebrated for its high quality of living and breathtaking natural landscapes, including Lake Geneva and Lake Zurich.
Norway: Beyond its spectacular views of the northern lights, Norway stands out as one of the safest places in terms of crime rates, terrorist activity, and violent demonstrations. Oslo, the capital of Norway, was particularly highlighted for its safety.
Ireland: Ireland, famous for landmarks like the Cliffs of Moher and its cultural richness, made the list due to its low homicide rates, making it a secure destination for travelers.
Netherlands: Despite dropping from its top spot last year, the Netherlands remains a safe destination, with respondents consistently expressing feelings of safety in the country, especially in Amsterdam.
United Kingdom: The UK, with its picturesque countryside and cities boasting low murder and theft rates, is considered a secure choice for travelers. However, a new border entry fee is set to be implemented.
Portugal: This sunny coastal country attracts digital nomads with its secure and orderly cities and peaceful rural areas. In 2022, Portugal was recognized as one of the best places for solo female travelers.
Denmark: Known for its happy residents and low crime rates, Denmark retains its status as a safe country for travelers. It was ranked as the second safest country in the world last year.

While these countries are considered safe overall, the report emphasizes that it does not account for potential natural disasters, and travelers should remain vigilant against petty theft. The safety rankings provide valuable insights for those planning trips, offering a balance between exploration and security.
