Cirium’s On-Time Performance Review 2023, a comprehensive assessment drawing on over 15 years of evaluating punctuality, was unveiled recently. The company meticulously analyzes data from over 600 real-time flight information sources to compile its insightful report, offering travelers valuable insights into the reliability of various airlines and airports.

The past year witnessed a bustling aviation landscape, with over 32 million scheduled passenger flights, according to Cirium’s report. Despite the challenges posed by the surge in travel demand, North American airlines demonstrated commendable operational resilience. James Hetzel, the Product Marketing Director at Cirium, expressed optimism for the upcoming year, foreseeing sustained operational excellence as the industry addresses and resolves challenges stemming from labor shortages and airport infrastructure.

Delta Air Lines emerged as the frontrunner yet again, securing the top spot with an impressive on-time arrival rate of 84.72% for over 1.4 million flights in 2023. The meticulous definition of “on-time” in this context refers to arrivals within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival or departure time. As travelers gear up for a potentially busier 2024, with an anticipated 9.4 billion passengers, surpassing 2019’s 9.2 billion, the reliability of airlines becomes paramount.

The top North American airlines for on-time performance in 2023, following Delta Air Lines, include Alaska Airlines (82.25%), American Airlines (80.61%), United Airlines (80.04%), Southwest Airlines (76.26%), Spirit Airlines (71.16%), WestJet (69.29%), Frontier Airlines (68.68%), JetBlue Airways (68.33%), and Air Canada (63.17%). The overall on-time arrival rate for North American airlines in 2023 stood at 74.45%, a marginal improvement from 74.26% in 2022, despite nearly 400,000 more scheduled flights.

Turning attention to major U.S. airports, the list of those with the best on-time departure performance in 2023 features Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (84.44%), Salt Lake City International Airport (83.99%), Ronald Reagan National Airport (83.20%), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (83.09%), Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (82.97%), Philadelphia International Airport (82.75%), LaGuardia Airport (81.34%), Charlotte Douglas International Airport (80.36%), San Diego International Airport (80.32%), and Washington Dulles International Airport (80.26%). Notably, these airports secured positions among the top 20 major airports globally with the best on-time departure performance. The global on-time departure rate for 2023 was 78.52%.
