Tennis icons Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf emerged victorious in Pickleball Slam 2, securing a $1 million purse as they outplayed the formidable duo of John McEnroe and Maria Sharapova. The thrilling event took place at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino and was broadcast in primetime on ESPN.

Agassi and Graf, both former world No. 1s and owners of a combined 42 Grand Slam singles titles in tennis, showcased their prowess in pickleball, a sport experiencing rapid growth in popularity. The event aimed to bridge the gap between tennis and pickleball, featuring former tennis pros alongside dedicated pickleball players.

Last year, Agassi and McEnroe participated in the event with fellow tennis legends Andy Roddick and Michael Chang. This time, Graf and Sharapova, along with pickleball enthusiasts Jack Sock and James Blake, joined the lineup, expanding the event’s reach and appeal.

In the first match, Agassi and Sock secured a victory against McEnroe and Blake with scores of 11-7, 9-11, 11-8. Graf and Sock continued the winning streak in the second match against Sharapova and Blake, triumphing with scores of 9-11, 11-8, 17-15.

The final match saw Agassi and Graf dominating with scores of 11-7, 13-11, completing a clean sweep of the event. The former tennis champions demonstrated their adaptability to pickleball, contributing to the sport’s growing recognition.

Despite McEnroe expressing a preference for singles matches in pickleball for a more intense workout, he acknowledged the challenge presented by doubles matches with intricate dink shots. McEnroe’s frustration manifested in a couple of paddle slams, highlighting the competitive nature of the event.

Graf, who has been playing pickleball seriously for approximately six months, admitted to feeling nervous before the event despite her extensive tennis career. The crowd’s energy and the unique experience of playing pickleball on a grand stage added to the excitement for Graf.

The three matches played out in different formats, showcasing the versatility of pickleball. Agassi and Sock’s initial win set the tone for the event, and Graf and Sock’s comeback in the second match further heightened the competition.

The players engaged in a mix of skills, strategic plays, and the fast-paced nature of pickleball. Sock emphasized the positive impact of events like Pickleball Slam in bridging the gap between tennis and pickleball, emphasizing that there is room for both sports to coexist.

In Pickleball Slam 1, Agassi and Andy Roddick claimed the $1 million purse by defeating McEnroe and Michael Chang in a winner-take-all doubles match with scores of 21-15, 21-23, 12-10.

Pickleball Slam 2 not only showcased the competitive spirit of tennis legends in embracing a new sport but also contributed to the cross-pollination of fans and players from different racquet sports. The event served as a testament to the evolving landscape of sports entertainment and the willingness of athletes to explore new challenges beyond their traditional domains.
