FDA Reports: Lead Testing Was Never Conducted on Recalled Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches

The FDA’s investigation into the recall of cinnamon applesauce pouches has revealed that the contaminated products, which sickened hundreds of children, were never tested for lead at the manufacturing plant. The inspection of the Austrofood factory in Ecuador found various issues, including a stainless-steel conveyor belt with “numerous rough edges, chipped, and pitted areas,” leading to metal pieces contaminating the final product. The FDA document also noted that the raw cinnamon used in the plant contained lead. However, the factory did not conduct tests for heavy metals on either raw ingredients or finished applesauce.

The inspection further highlighted sanitary concerns at the plant, citing inadequate sanitary facilities and accommodations. Additionally, steps in the pasteurization process, designed to destroy microorganisms, were found to be inadequately followed.

The recalled applesauce pouches, linked to lead poisoning cases across 42 states, were sold under various brands, including WanaBana, Schnucks, and Weis. The CDC has received 385 reports of lead poisoning cases tied to the recall, with affected children showing blood lead levels ranging from 4 to 29 micrograms per deciliter.

The CDC recommends that individuals do not consume the recalled apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches and suggests blood testing for those who may have been exposed to lead. Children with blood lead levels exceeding 3.5 micrograms per deciliter are considered to have elevated levels.

The recall began with WanaBana on October 29, expanding later to include Schnucks and Weiss brands. The FDA states that the investigation is ongoing, and updates will be provided as available. Parents are advised to consult healthcare providers if they suspect their children have been exposed to lead.
