A federal grand jury in Utah has indicted a minor league baseball player, Darnel Silver Collins, on charges, including interference with a flight crew, after he allegedly assaulted a Delta Air Lines flight attendant and spat on fellow passengers during a flight from the Netherlands to Salt Lake City. The 19-year-old, who plays as a minor league first baseman and outfielder in the Kansas City Royals organization, engaged in what was described as “unruly and abusive behavior” on the Delta Flight 57, according to U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins for the District of Utah.
The incident occurred on January 21 when Collins had to be restrained by flight attendants and passengers due to his disruptive actions. The federal indictment stated that he continued to cause problems and had to be consistently monitored for the remaining nine hours of the flight.
According to court documents filed in U.S. District Court, approximately one hour into the flight, Collins became loud and disruptive, tapping passengers around him. As the flight progressed, his behavior escalated. He reportedly followed another passenger, physically touching her, and had to be asked by a flight attendant to leave her alone. Collins continued his disruptive behavior, grabbing another woman’s arm as she exited a restroom, only releasing her when intervened by another passenger and a flight crew member. Due to his continued unwanted touching of other passengers, he was physically restrained in flexicuffs by the flight crew and taken into custody upon arrival at Salt Lake City International Airport.
Court records reveal that Collins, a citizen of the Netherlands, was threatening and abusive to other passengers and crew members during the flight. He was charged with interference with a flight crew and assault by striking, beating, and wounding. Collins, who travels between the U.S. and the Netherlands during the baseball off-season, was living in Surprise, Arizona, at the time of his arrest.
The incident adds to a string of recent disruptive events on flights, raising concerns about the safety and security of air travel. The FAA has reported a significant increase in unruly passenger incidents in recent years, with many cases linked to non-compliance with mask mandates and other COVID-19 related guidelines. Authorities have taken a firm stance against disruptive behavior on flights, emphasizing the serious legal consequences for such actions.
Collins is scheduled to appear before a judge for his initial court appearance on the charges at the Orrin G. Hatch United States District Courthouse in downtown Salt Lake City. Interference with a flight crew is considered a serious offense, and individuals convicted of such charges can face severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines. The case highlights the importance of maintaining order and safety on flights, and it serves as a reminder of the legal consequences for those who engage in disruptive behavior during air travel. Airlines and law enforcement agencies continue to work together to address and prevent such incidents, ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers and crew members during flights.
