New Mexico police in the towns of Deming and Las Cruces responded to reports of suspicious packages, with Deming authorities discovering an explosive device, leading to the closure of Interstate 10 in two locations. The incident in Deming occurred near the adult probation center, prompting the involvement of a New Mexico State Police bomb squad to assess the situation.

Deming’s interim police chief, Jose Montoya, stated, “Officers did locate some type of device near the entrance of the building.” However, he mentioned that state police had taken over the investigation, with local authorities playing a supporting role.

In a parallel development in Las Cruces, approximately 60 miles east of Deming, police received a call reporting a suspicious package at around 8:40 a.m. The bomb squad and ATF investigated and determined that the reported package was empty. Las Cruces public information officer Dan Trujillo noted, “The bomb squad and ATF determined it was an empty box at about 11:40.”

Las Cruces Police emphasized in a press release that, at the moment, there is no conclusive evidence linking the Las Cruces incident to those reported in other parts of New Mexico. The city’s police authorities remain vigilant but have not established a definite connection.

The discovery of the explosive device in Deming led to the closure of sections of Interstate 10 as a precautionary measure. Additionally, the magistrate court building, located less than a mile from where the device was found, was closed for the day, according to information from the Las Cruces Sun News, a part of the USA TODAY network.

Law enforcement agencies in New Mexico are taking these incidents seriously, particularly in the context of heightened concerns about public safety. The involvement of a bomb squad suggests that authorities are employing specialized units to handle and assess the potential threats associated with these suspicious packages.

In Deming, the proximity of the explosive device to a public facility, the adult probation center, adds a layer of concern, prompting swift and coordinated efforts by local and state law enforcement. The decision to close sections of Interstate 10 also underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety of the public and preventing any potential threats from escalating.

As investigations continue in both Deming and Las Cruces, authorities will likely work to determine if there is any connection between the reported incidents. The discovery of an explosive device raises questions about the nature and origin of the threat, and investigators will be tasked with uncovering relevant details to address these concerns.

Communities in the affected areas may experience increased law enforcement presence and security measures as authorities work to resolve the situation and provide assurance to residents. The incidents highlight the importance of public vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities, allowing law enforcement to respond effectively to potential threats.

As information unfolds, residents are encouraged to follow updates from official law enforcement channels and adhere to any guidance provided to ensure their safety and the overall security of the affected areas. Authorities will likely conduct thorough investigations to identify any potential motives behind these incidents and apprehend those responsible for placing the public at risk.
