Taiwanese Voters Reaffirm Commitment to Democracy Despite China’s Disinformation and Interference

Taiwan Elections

The dawn of a new chapter in Taiwan’s democratic journey unfolded as the nation elected Lai Ching-te as president and Bi-khim Hsiao as vice president in its eighth presidential election since 1996. With the Kuomintang Party, Democratic Progressive Party, and Taiwan People’s Party dominating the Legislative Yuan, Taiwan’s successful completion of yet another free and fair election underscores its status as a mature and vibrant democracy.

Beyond the island’s borders, the world keenly observed this election, acknowledging its significance. International reporters, numbering in the hundreds, descended on Taiwan, emphasizing the global importance of the 2024 vote. The attention is justified, considering the juxtaposition of Taiwan’s democratic accomplishments against the backdrop of increasing aggression from the People’s Republic of China (PRC). China has employed disinformation, diplomatic pressure, economic leverage, and hybrid “gray zone” tactics to interfere in Taiwan’s democratic processes.

Taiwan’s resilience in the face of these challenges is rooted in the island nation’s commitment to democracy. Despite the PRC’s attempts to undermine democratic values, Taiwan remains a shining example, located just 100 miles from China’s coast, proving that democracy is a universal value capable of thriving in diverse cultures.

Every election in Taiwan reinforces the society’s determination to defend freedom and democracy. The people’s resounding message is that only a democratically elected government has the right to represent Taiwan internationally, and no coercion will alter this fundamental stance. The freedom to vote emerges as a powerful weapon against authoritarianism.

Over the past eight years, Taiwan has fostered a robust partnership with the United States, grounded in a shared commitment to freedom and democracy. As global democratic norms face challenges worldwide, Taiwan becomes increasingly pivotal in the struggle against authoritarianism. Taiwan’s role extends beyond its borders, contributing significantly to global peace.

International support for Taiwan has grown, and the nation pledges to collaborate with the United States and the global community to pursue peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. This endeavor is deemed crucial for the well-being of all nations and represents a shared responsibility on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

As Taiwan’s new president prepares to assume office, strengthening the Taiwan-U.S. relationship will be a top priority. Given the geopolitical challenges in the region, security cooperation between Taiwan and the U.S. will remain paramount. Taiwan has augmented its defense budget and implemented comprehensive security reforms to underscore its determination to defend against any military aggression from China.

Economically, Taiwan aims to build on its achievements in trade and commerce with the United States. Enhanced bilateral economic partnerships and initiatives like the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st Century Trade contribute to global supply chain stability and resilience. The signing of an avoidance of double taxation agreement is deemed crucial for facilitating investments between Taiwan and the United States.

“Taiwan Can Help” is a globally recognized slogan, signifying Taiwan’s willingness to provide assistance during crises or natural disasters. As Taiwan possesses valuable expertise, there is a pressing need to include Taiwan in the United Nations system. The U.S.’s support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations is acknowledged, and efforts to encourage other nations to follow suit are appreciated.

Taiwan remains a force for good, focusing on substantive initiatives in partnerships with the United States and like-minded countries. In an era when global democracy faces challenges, and authoritarian powers are on the rise, Taiwan stands as a beacon of democracy in East Asia. The people of Taiwan have spoken, choosing the path of democracy, and they are resolute in preserving this fundamental commitment.
